AI Tackles Agricultural Decline Amidst Aging Workforce

Japan’s agricultural landscape faces a crisis: the number of farming entities has halved in the past 20 years, with 80% of primary farmers now over the age of 60.

Recognizing this urgent need, Kochi IoP Plus, based in Nankoku City, Kochi Prefecture, has developed systems to alleviate both financial and physical burdens on farmers.

Tadashige Iwao, the technical director of the project and a professor at Kochi University’s IoP Co-Creation Center, emphasizes the importance of AI in sustaining agricultural productivity.

Mathematical Models for Precision Farming

After joining Kochi University in 2021, Iwao, a former Fujitsu researcher, recognized the challenges faced by farmers and subsequently developed a high-precision mathematical model for predicting crop yields by 2023.

This new model accurately forecasts plant growth by mapping the relationship between reproductive growth (fruit development) and vegetative growth (stem and root development). This interplay was previously difficult to predict due to the fluctuating environmental responses between these two growth phases.

The model’s success has paved the way for the creation of systems tailored to farmers and agricultural cooperatives, as well as logistics companies.

Streamlining Agricultural Operations and Reducing Waste

The system uses sensors in greenhouses to collect real-time data on CO2 levels, sunlight exposure, and leaf conditions, and then analyzes this information to recommend optimal temperature and CO2 concentrations for improved photosynthesis. These recommendations are displayed on a website for farmers to access.

Furthermore, to enhance trade value and reduce waste, a labor-saving system to streamline the distribution of crops to various markets is currently being developed.

AI models are revolutionizing logistics by predicting crop yields before harvest. This allows for accurate scheduling of transportation, a significant improvement over the traditional system where farmers arranged trucks without precise forecasts, often leading to inefficiencies. This innovation is projected to reduce fuel costs by 30% and will be available for commercial use in February 2025.

Challenges of an Aging Agricultural Sector

The 2024 Japanese government report revealed a steep decline in the number of agricultural businesses, dropping from over 2 million in 2005 to roughly 880,000. This decline is compounded by the aging population of farmers and the reluctance of younger generations to take up farming due to the substantial initial investment and the lack of modernization in the sector.

The number of new farmers in Kochi Prefecture has decreased from 260 in 2020 to approximately 210, partly because of increasing material costs. To counter this, local officials are promoting the use of modern farming technologies, such as AI and mechanization, to revitalize agriculture and attract younger people to farming.
